Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N accordance with Italy's trend towards the increasing use of oil fuel because of the scarcity of petrol, the new Fiat 626 lorry employs an oil engine for its power unit. With an unladen ..weight of 2 tons 14 cwt., the Fiat is comparable with the British 5-ton 30 m.p.h. goods vehicle, of which a number of makes is available.

The qualities claimed for the engine are that it is of exceptional power and very economical. According to " Autdmotive Industries," of America, the sixcylindered unit develops 70 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m., with a bore of 3.937 ins. and stroke of 4.80 ins.

A well-known British oil engine also develops 70 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m., but with a bore and stroke of 3.5 ins. and 5 ins. respectively. Thus, the Italian vehicle has an unfavourable 25 per cent. greater piston displacement for the same power developed. The British engine scores again on fuel consumption, which is in the region of 20 m.p.g., whereas the Italian claim is 13 m.p.g.

On all counts the British-designed high-speed oil engine is well ahead of continental or American counterparts. The British engine is more economical and more robust than any of its competitors.

American-devgned engines are at the moment passing through a phase of fuelpump troubles, because of metallurgical difficulties. The fuel-pump camshaft material is found to wear under the heavy loading, and efforts are now being turned towards chromium-plating •the lobes of the camshaft. On the samples tested so far, it has been found:that the. plating flakes under the loadirig. "
