Roller Rims Pressed NAANY members of the Cold From Thick Steel 11'1 I.R.T.E. who visited the

Sheet Aveling-Barford Works at Grantham were interested in the way in which the rims for rollers are constructed, A system rather like that used in shaping boilers is . employed. A flat plate 1 1-32-in, thick is inserted between two fixed stops and the shaped end of a hydraulic ram which can exercise a pressure of up to 400 tons. The plate is passed along and the ram A24

rapidly bends it. The process is repeated until the plate assumes a complete circle, the ends being previously made into V form to allow for filling from each side while welding. A simple curve gauge is used inside the roll, and any deviation from this is corrected by further pressing before welding. The accuracy is surprising, in view of the fact that the process is carried out while the metal is cold.

No Depreciation on THE current series of a Brand-New Goods. I articles by S.T.R., deal Vehicle ing with the difficulties and problems of the newcomer to the haulage industry, lend point to a story that we heard quite recently. This concerned a conversation between an experienced haulier and the father of a young man just out of the Services and entering the haulage industry. The older man was trying to do for the younger man what S.T.R. has done for so many newcomers, that is, give him some idea as to how to assess his costs. He was quite confident that very little information was needed. The son knew all about petrol, oil, maintenance and tyres, and what not, and he thought that he would make a go of it. Then the experienced haulier said: "Yes, that's all right, but has your son made proper allowance for depreciation?" "Oh," said the father. "There will be no depreciation on this lorry, it is brand-new "
