THE GOVERNMENT needs to give hauliers breathing space and ramp up spending on infrastructure to maintain the economic recovery, says the boss of Jack Richards & Son.

Peter Brown, MD of the Norfolk-based haulier, tells CM that, after a bright start, the second half of 2011 has been tough, as the UK economy grinds to a halt and businesses lose confidence.

“We’ve been busy, but a degree of uncertainty remains due to the economic climate,” he says.

“We’ve found ourselves asking ‘do we invest or back away?’. Everyone in the UK is in the same place.” Brown wants the government to heed FairFuelUK’s call for next year’s petrol duty increases to be axed, arguing hauliers large and small need fuel price stability during the next 12 months to help them get through the challenging economic climate. “The government needs to invest in infrastructure to create demand. housing market moving again will help the industry,” says Brown.

In the full year to 31 May 2011, turnover was up 9.8% to £25.6m (2010: £23.4m), helped by the firm’s continuing relationship with Nestle and growth in the recovery of waste products for clients.

Pre-tax profit was up by 19% to £570,626 (2010: £477,847).
