ARSONISTS have destroyed five vehicles in an attack on a haulage yard in Durham.

The fire at Durham City Transport last week could have been far worse if co-owner David Nicholson had not leapt into an 18-tonne truck and driven it away from the fire. The gap he created provided a firebreak that stopped the blaze from spreading.

Nicholson's business partner Les Coatrnan says:" It was a brave thing to do. It was so hot the plastic on the end of the key melted after as he put it in the lock. He was OK, though: he's a tough old boot."

General haulier Durham City Transport has been operating for 15 years and currently runs a fleet of 30 vehicles.
