Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HERE are some further questions _ and answers — concerning vocational qualifications.

• What is an assessor?

An assessor is someone who is responsible for checking and agreeing that a candidate has reached the standards laid down.

That person could be the candidate's supervisor or manager. Alternatively, it could be someone employed from outside the candidate's Organisation.

• How can I be sure that the N/SVQ assessor is qualified to assess?

An assessor should be qualified to standards laid down by the Training and Development Lead Body (TDLB) as specified within TDLB Units D32 and D33.

Assessors should also be occupationally competent in the area in which they propose to assess. In other words, they should be experienced in the work which the candidate does.

• What is an external verifier?

This is the person appointed by the awarding body (in other words, in the road haulage and distribution sector, RSA, RTITB Services Ltd (RSL) or SCOTVEC) who checks that all the requirements of the qualification have been correctly assessed and authorises the issue of the certificate upon completion.

• Can N/SVQs provide entry into professional institutes?

They may do so but you will need to check this with the individual organisations concerned.

• Do I have to pass an exam to get an N/SVQ? N/SVQs are primarily obtained by assessment. There may be occasions when written or oral answers form part of the assessment process but formal, paper-based examinations will not normally form part of this process.

• Do I have to pass any other qualifications before I can be assessed for an N/SVQ?

No. There are no entry requirements. Access is open to everybody regardless of age, sex, or academic ability.

• Will the standards be updated?

Yes. The standards are periodically reviewed as part of a formal re-accreditation process. The RHDTC-published levels 1 and 2 standards will be reviewed formally in 1995. If you wish to make any comments or observations about these standards, please contact the RHDTC.

• What are GNVQs?

They are General National Vocational Qualifications and are mainly intended for 16 to 19 year olds in full time education. GNVQs are a high quality alternative to GCE 'A' levels and GCSEs. They are designed to show what students know and what they can do.

Approximately 90,000 students have already started GNVQ courses in a range of subjects. • I know you have N/SVQs available for transport managers and supervisors; for drivers and traffic staff. What about workshop mechanics and apprentices?

['here are N/SVQs available for workshop staff. For details, contact Ray Lee at the Motor Industry Training Standards Council (MITSC), the Lead Body responsible for this occupational area (tel 071 436 6373).

• How many people have been awarded road haulage and distribution N/SVQs?

Since their launch in November 1993, some 450 N/SVQs have been awarded.
