The RHDTC officially launched supervisory and management standards in London at the end of November.

THE Road Haulage & Distribution Training Council (RIIDTC) took a significant step towards helping to meet the government's National Training and Education Targets by launching occupational standards related to su pervisory and management grades — N/SVQs levels 3 and 4 — in Westminster at the end of November. Home Office minister the Baroness Blatch, presiding over the launch of the standards, commented: "If we, as a country, are to become increasingly competitive and successful in world markets, we must demonstrate the high level of skills that this success requires.

"We need to be able to measure these skills and have nationally recognised standards — benchmarks — to which everyone can aspire. This is the principle on which the government's National Education and Training Targets are based.

"Today's launch of supervisory and management occupational standards by the Road Haulage est Distribution Training Council marks a significant step towards helping to achieve these National Education and Training Targets."

Responding, the RHDTC's chairman, Victor Ross stressed the importance of the new occupational standards.

"With the addition of these supervisory and management standards, we now have occupational standards in place for the road haulage and distribution industry which apply to well over 95 per cent of our industry's activities," he said.

"These standards reflect current 'best practice' in our industry and they have the approval of employers and trades unions. In meeting the requirements of these standards, workers in our industry will be demonstrating their competence and gaining widespread, tangible recognition for their skills — and helping our industry to remain competitive and offer our customers excellent value for money."
