Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Wide single trailer tyres cause 26% more road damage than twins, says ROR Rockwell's chief development engineer, Martin Peaker. And he points out that the difference in damage between the two tyre sets was greater than the difference between normal and road friendly suspensions.

With a smaller contact patch the pressure and stress exerted on the road surface is greater than that from a pair of tyres. Michelin accepts there might be a 10% increase in road damage with singles but says that this is when they are compared with perfectly matched tyres, which is rare in practice.
