Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EXCLUSIVE by John Kendall • Mercedes' replacement for the current LN2 range, which runs from 7.5 to 15 tonnes GVW, will be launched in 1997. With a 1997 launch date Mercedes will have replaced its light van, middle and heavyweight truck ranges in the space of two years.

It appears from the photos that Mercedes has opted for an integrated cab design, sharing the windscreen and some door and cab pressings with the prototype heavy SK cab (CM 20-26 January). This will enable the company to extend automated production at its Worth truck plant in Germany—in line with its plan to shed thousands of jobs there in the next few years.

The low-entry cab is likely to be offered with a sleeper option as well as the day cab shown here.

Note the high mount ed front indicator lamps, separate from the front headlamp units where LN2 indicators are positioned.

Power will come from Mercedes in-line four and six-cylinder Euro-2 engines for the lighter models. The 1997 launch means the LK is likely to be fitted with Mercedes "second generation" Euro-2 engines. These will have "common rail" fuel injection systems, replacing those used in the 'irst generation Euro-2 models. The advantage of common rail is that injection pressures are independent of engine speed so high pressure can be maintained at low engine speeds. Selected cylinders can be shut down if their power is not required. Common rail systems will eventually be used on all Mercedes diesels.

The cab may also be designed to take the larger capacity vee-six engines: some LN2 models are fitted with the vee-six for drawbar applications. This move will be more likely if the LK cab is fitted to tipper chassis.
