TO MENTION Ethiopia and Christmas in the same breath is almost obscene but that, felicitously, is when eight DAF 330bhp 6 x4 tractors and Nooteboom platform trailers are due in Assab to begin hauling food from Ethiopian ports to the stricken areas. The vehicles have been bought by Save the Children Fund, whose overseas director, Hugh Mackay, warns that "they will be overloaded and worked unmercifully hard" round the clock for many months. This prospect does not daunt Harro Posthumus, DAF Trucks International Division's director of international sales at Eindhoven, who pledges his company to "do absolutely anything" to keep the lorries working 24 hours a day. This, I may add, is not just Dutch courage.
