Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The BBC spent three hours on Saturday covering some people running with a fire on a stick through Cornwall and Devon. While this is surely overkill, it does point ahead to the next four months. The Olympics are here, they are really happening and it is time for the whinging to stop.

I must confess to being one of those whingers myself. The prospect of months and months of disruption, with people coming to this country from all over the world to clog up the roads, all in the name of watching some people run and swim, seems a bit bonkers to me. But, like it or not, this is what is going to happen.

Hauliers are betting business on it too. I spoke to Stobart boss Andrew Tinkler last week and he expects an Olympics boost as we all eat more, drink more and buy some trainers to run like the athletes we will see on the TV. Nigel Parkes at Pallet-Track tells us that the surge in volumes will benefit all 74 of its members too (page 8).

Britain has wagered big (£9.3bn or more big) that the Olympics will boost the fortunes of the country. One has to hope that the collective spirit of goodwill towards a mass sporting event and celebration of what makes Britain great has the desired effect.

Frankly, it’s the only choice on the horizon. Get into the spirit or let others win at your expense.
