THE LOAN OF AN 0-licence disc led to two operators being ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £4,000 by magistrates in Barking, Essex.

Maina Freight Forwarders, of New Cavendish Street, London, pleaded guilty to lending an 0-licence disc with intent to deceive.

The recipient. Pravin Varsani of Harrow, pleaded guilty to using an 0-licence disc with intent to deceive, using a vehicle without an 0-licence, and taking insufficient daily rest.

Anthony Ostrin, prosecuting for Vosa, said a vehicle driven by Varsani had been stopped in a roadside check. It was displaying an 0-licence disc in the name of Maina Freight Forwarders; Varsani told the traffic examiner that he was employed by Maina Freight Forwarders.

However, he later admitted that he was actually a sole trader and was using the Maina Freight Forwarders licence until he gained one of his own.

MaMa's managing director Bupindra Madlani told the traffic examiner the company had lent its licence to Varsani until he gained his own. Madlani claimed the company did not know it was an offence to lend its licence to a third party.

Varsani subsequently told the traffic examiner that Maina Freight had supplied him with an 0-licence disc for a fee of £250 per month until he was able to obtain his own 0-licence. He also said he did not realise he was committing an offence.

Appearing for Maina Freight Forwarders, Raj Pa bari said Madlani was a friend of Varsani, and had loaned him the licence so he could operate while waiting for his licence.

MaMa Freight was fined £3,000 with £175 costs; Varsani was fined £650 with £175 costs.
