Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

when new legislation by the Ministry of Transport comes into effect, covering the emission of smoke from diesel-engined vehicles?

A The Road Safety Act 1967 will enable

new measures to be introduced which will help to reduce emissions of diesel smoke: smoke tests will be included in the MoT annual vehicle checks that will start in October.

No indication has yet been given by the MoT of the type of smoke test that will be used. As the law stands, smoke emission must not be such that it is a danger to others —for example that it obscures the view of the driver of a following vehicle. It has been customary for MoT examiners to make visual checks of smoke emission during roadside spot checks.
