Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• -The Minister of Transport has dismissed an appeal by three operators against the renewal by the West Midland Traffic Commissioners of an express carriage service licence between Tamworth and Brighton. Eastbourne and Hastings.

The Commissioners granted the renewal to Wainfleet Motor Services Ltd. and the appeal was brought on the issue that the period of operation was extended so that it would begin on Easter Saturday with a vehicle allowance of one; it was accepted that most of the traffic would derive from picking-points at Nuneaton, Coton, Bedworth, Exhall, and Coventry. The appellants (Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co, Southdown Motor Services and Maidstone and District Motor Services1 provided a year-round daily service from Nuneaton and Coventry, changing in London.

The Minister felt the proposed extension was in the public interest, especially since it avoided a change of vehicle and a long wait in London, but agreed with the inspector that there was a need to protect regular services from harmful competition.
