TRUCK MANUFACTURERS are threatening the economic recovery as they are reluctant to pass pricing-related information to third parties as alleged price ixing probes by the Ofice of Fair Trading and the European Commission continue, says CV evaluator CAP.

Barrie Travis, heavy CV editor of CAP’s Red Book, says the lack of information is threatening the reliable forecasting of future used truck values.

Organisations lending money to truck operators and owner-drivers need to understand any future risk on assets, and use vehicle pricing from independent third parties, such as CAP, to arrange inance. “Key information from some manufacturers is drying up in response to fears that it may compromise their commercial security,” says Travis.

The OFT started its investigation last year, followed by a separate EC probe this year. “This is a classic example of the law of unintended consequences and could undermine the tentative recovery we are seeing in the market,” he says. ■
