SPEAKING at the annual luncheon of the Mansion House Association on Transport last Friday, the president, Mr. R. A. McNeille, said it was doubtful whether it was wise to place so heavy a burden on one man as the White Paper appeared to do. The importance of reshaping the railways was realized and Mr. McNeille was glad to read in the White Paper that the need for their commercial isolation was recognized. The railways should be allowed to remould their industry as only they could properly determine. There was the undoubted difficulty of corn • patability between social and commercial claims.
Mr. K. W. G. Grand, president of the Institute of Transport, said that the railways recognized that the role given to them by the White Paper represented a challenge and the proposed redistribution was a formidable exercise not to be underestimated.
After this cross-road it was hoped transport would be allowed to settle down.
