CLAIMED to cost about £500 less than N.,' its nearest competitor, a 4 x 4 tipper with ail-steel 5-cu.-yd. body is announced today by Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Luton. The new vehicle is based on the wellknown Bedford R-type chassis, and complete with Telehoist body the petrolengined version costs £1,678, the oilengined model costing only £100 mole. Chassis-cab price is £1,340 for the petrolengined vehicle, and £1,250 for the chassis-cowl variant—oil-engined models are £100 more in each case again.
Instead of having the standard R-type wheelbase of 13 ft., the new tipper has a wheelbase of 11 ft. The gross-weight rating is 10 tons 5÷ cwt., which gives a payload allowance of 6 tons when the standard body is fitted. Road-tread 8.25-20-in, radial-ply tyres are standard equipment, with the option of 9.00-20-in. tyres at extra cost, twin rear wheels being fitted in both cases: The Telehoist body offered with the new tipper has fixed sides and a cab guard. Twin-ram underfloor tipping gear is employed, and flitch plates are incorporated. The standard transmission line includes a two-speed transfer box, which gives direct-drive when the rear axle only is driving, and a reduction of 2 to 1 when front-wheel-drive is engaged. On chassis-cab and chassis-cowl versions a power take-off is available as optional equipment.
Other factory-approved options include a 13-in.-diameter clutch with the Bedford oil engine, a mechanical governor on the same engine, and three-piece wheels. Radio, heater and demister, foglamp, reversing lamp, and windscreen washers are listed as approved accessories.
