Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Illegally

BECAUSE it was thought that the grant of short-term B licences was purely administrative and automatic, tipping vehicles had worked illegally since midFebruary in the removal of excavated material from Templeborough to Kilnhurst, the Yorkshire Licensing Authority. Maj. F. S. Eastwood, was told at Leeds East week.

Applications by X.R.E. Transport Co., Rotherham, and 30 others, for short-term B licences have been called to public inquiry to investigate the position.

Mr. J. A. Nielson, for the applicants, said Tarmac, Ltd., had contracted to demolish and reconstruct the two steel roiling mills at iempleborough involving the initial removal of 250,000 tons of excavated material in 13 weeks. £200,000 of steel would be lost each week while the mills were out of action, and because of the extreme urgency they were required to start work almost immediately.

The Organizer Applications to Sheffield Haulage and Storage, Ltd., and other local operators for vehicles were unsuccessful, and Mr. I-1. R. Pinchbeck, of X.R.E. Transport, agreed to act as organizer with a contract on a tonnage basis. Because of the 'difficulty the Road Haulage Association at Sheffield were approached and they advised short-term B licences for persons willing to provide vehicles, including some from South Wales, and suggested it was a purely administrative matter, and licences would be granted automatically.

• 70, Tippers

Mr. Pinchbeck said approximately 70 tippers were required, of which 40 were in operation, including seven properly licensed vehicles of his own. .1-le would give an undertaking not to seek to use the work done under short-term licence as evidence for the.grant of other licences.

The applications were • granted with conditions allowing the, use of vehicles under the control of X.R.E., Sheffield Haulage and. Storage and the: Barnsley Pool. ,

"Forgotten" Routes Get Increases

IN order to bring five of their stage I services into line with currerit fare tables, Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., were granted increases before the North Western Traffic Commissioners at C horley on Tuesday.

Mr. F. D. Walker; for the company, said that all the services in question were operated in the Blackpool and Poultonle-Fylde district. They did not run joint services with Blackpool Corporation transport, but it was their practice to have common fares and to institute the best overall regular running frequency. These fares should have been increased in May. 1960, when the company had revised most of their tables, hut somehow t'ie' had been overlooked.
