THE FREIGHT TRANSPORT Association has launched a policy document for Scotland to highlight the specific needs of the Scottish transport industry.
The role of freight in the Scottish economy is believed to be a response to recent transport plans from the Scottish Executive which emphasised the needs of passenger transport and barely mentioned freight.
The FTA hopes the document, launched to MSPs last week, will help promote the industry's needs and alter policy in its favour. Carl Olufsen, chairman of the
FTA's Scottish freight council, says:"Being on the edge of Europe means that Scottish transport costs are higher and industry's supply chains are longer, making them more vulnerable to disruption and breakdown.
"Therefore to ensure Scotland's competitiveness in an expanding global market, and to attract inward investment, a reliable, predictable and uncongested road network is essential."
A quarter of Scotland's income comes from exports; the logistics industry employs more people than agriculture or tourism.
