Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Brian Weather-ley As predicted by Commercial Motor, Daf has taken its 12.6litre XF engine above 500hp for the first time with the new in-line six featuring Daf's own electronically controlled unit pump fuel injection system (UPEC).

The 530hp XF engine produces 2,350Nm (1,7271bft) of torque-12% more than the 480hp XF rating, previously the most powerful—and will be available in a 4x2 or 6x2 twinsteer or a 6x4 tractor.

Until now the most powerful engine fitted in the 95XF was the 14-litre Cummins N-Series at 525hp: with the arrival of the latest XF diesel Daf no longer needs a proprietary engine from an outside supplier to take it into the "high-horsepower" club.

Daf has gone straight to Euro-3 with the 530hp XF engine. As well as the UPEC fuel system, it features modified piston crowns, revised inlet ports and injectors

and an electronicallycontrolled bypass on the turbocharger. Operators can

order a 95XF.530 under either a Space Cab or a Super Space Cab, for delivery in midNovember.

In combination with the new engine, Daf is fitting an overdrive version of the ZF 16S 221 Ecospkt box and is also offering ZF's Servoshift as standard on all 95XF Super Space Cab models and as an option on all Space Cabs for £150.

In the run-up to next year's tougher emission standards, Daf will release a range of UPECequipped Euro-3 9.2 and 12.6-litre engines from late September with ratings of 250-480hp. Euro-2 XF engines will retain their mechanical fuel control. Versions of the UPEC system have already undergone extensive testing on Oaf's racing trucks. The Anglo-Dutch truck manufacturer is predicting a slight reduction in fuel economy for Euro-3—but says that this can be offset by a revised driving style.

It is now taking orders for Euro-3 engines, which will carry a price premium of £2,300 over Euro-2 models.

• CM understands that Leyland Daf will soon follow Scania with a green engine which qualifies for a VED rebate without exhaust after-treatment.
