• Securicor was left with a red face when the ashes of a man fell from the back of one of its vans in Brighton last week.

Stephen Ball, divisional marketing manager of Securicor Distribution, says the driver had collected the casket from Woodvale Crematorium, Sussex. and was travelling to the firm's Brighton depot.

But as the van travelled over speed bumps the rear doors came open and several packages fell onto the road.

Despite stopping to retrieve them, the driver did not notice the missing parcel, destined for a crematorium in Norwich until he returned to the depot.

The ashes were found by a member of the public and returned to Securicor later that day. They were sent on to Norwich by express courier.

In a statement, a spokesman for Securicor says: The company takes incidents of this kind very seriously. We will therefore be questioning the driver about this incident and checking the vehicle before it is returned to service."

Securicor has formally apologised to the family.
