Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

m An experienced truck driver who lost his licence for medical reasons after changing his doctor has been told by the DVLA that he will be allowed to drive again—if he can persuade a psychiatrist to change his report.

John King, of Watchet, Somerset, says doctors had written a misleading report based on the change to his dose of medication for an underactive thyroid gland.

A new doctor changed his dose in December 1997. When King felt unwell he asked for a second opinion and was advised to revert to the original higher dose. But this prompted the original GP to say he had abused his dosage. The DVLA then insisted on psychiatric tests.

King is now trying to persuade the psychiatrist, who is based at Ryden House, Taunton, to change his report so that he can come off the dole and return to driving. "The pyschiatrist's report was based on what the GP said but that was wrong," says King. "I've got to get someone qualified to go up against him. I feel like it's a test to see ill will stick with it." In April King told CM that he had an unblemished 34-year record as a driver and was "shattered" by the loss of his licence.
