Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE growing practice of making long, prefabricated structures in workshops to save costs and assembly time at building sites was referred to before the Scottish Licensing Authority last week, when Messrs. James Hunter and Sons, Kitchener Street, Wishaw, applied to operate an Si-ton trailer.

Mr. James Hunter, manager of the applicant firm, said that the trailer was required so that long structures could be properly transported. Large building projects were planned for the area and the demand for long vehicles would increase.

A supporting witness mentioned the shortage of suitable transport in the Wishaw district, and said that finished products could sometimes not immediately be taken away from his works.

The hearing was adjourned until September, when the objectors will put their case. The Authority asked them to consider the availability of large trailers for construction work.

ROADS TO IMPROVE LIVING

DEMANDING greater expenditure on roads, in a letter to the Prime Minister last week, Lord Derwent, chairman of the British Road Federation, stated that if the Government's intention to double the standard of living within 25 years were to be realized, modern highways must be provided.

Lord Derwent referred to road conditions during the rail strike as likely to prevail every day in a " very few years."

He added that a National Highway Authority should be created to carry out a major programme of new construction and road improvement.
