DAMAGES amounting to £624 were awarded against Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., at Chester Assizes last week, as the result of an accident to a driver which occurred during treelopping operations. A bough fell on to the plaintiff, Mr. Samuel Lewis, and injured his spine. Mr. Lewis alleged negligence on the part of his employers and their servant, Mr. William Kendrick, who supervised the work. Mr. Justice Streatfeild said that Mr. Kendrick should have warned Mr. Lewis when the bough was about to fall. He did not do so and was, therefore, personally negligent and his employers vicariously so. The company should have impressed Mr. Kendrick with the importance of giving warning, and by failing to do so were directly negligent. The judge refuted a submission by the defence that the plaintiff was partly responsible by failing to exercise proper care, and said that Mr. Lewis could reasonably have relied upon a warning from the man in charge.

FIVE MORE SEATS

AS an experiment, the accommodation of one of Sunderland Transport Department's buses is to be increased from 58 to 63. Two extra scats will be provided in the lower saloon and three Upstairs. If the trial succeeds, similar alterations will be made to other vehicles.

£30,000 NOT ENOUGH

%yJIIEN plans for a new £30,000 YV bus station in Scotswood Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, were submitted to the transport committee, the chairman described them as only a palliative.
