Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE suggestion that a " shadow " transport pool should be a permanent part of the Road Haulage Association organization on a national basis for use in the event of any further disruption of national services, has been made to Capt. T. S. Riley, vice-chairman of York Sub-area, by Major F. Eastwood, Yorkshire Licensing Authority.

Major Eastwood made this suggestion in a letter thanking the sub-area for the assistance rendered to the emergency organization of the Ministry of Transport during the rail strike. He was referring to the pool of 400 lorries organized by the sub-area (The Commercial Motor,)ast week).

The pool, which ceased to function last Sunday, was formed by circularizing all members of the sub-area, asking them to telephone to headquarters each day their availability of vehicles.

Users requiring transport were directed through the local Press to telephone contacts in various parts of the area. These were situated at Harrogate and Ripon, Thirsk and Easingwold, and the south-eastern area and headquarters at York. From there, they were put in touch with operators with spare vehicles.

Volunteers manned the telephones at headquarters for 24 hours a day. The only expenses incurred were for advertising, postage and telephone calls.

The pool can be mobilized again within 24 hours.

MANIFOLD PRODUCTION INCREASE BY AUSTIN

TODAY over 120 Austin vehicles are I produced every hour. The same number was made in the first year of operation of the Longbridge works.

This is stated by Sir Leonard Lord, chairman and managing director of the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., in a jubilee message. To date, over 2,320,000 Austin vehicles have been made.

The company's 50th anniversary, to be celebrated on July 9, will be a highly organized event to be attended by 20,000 people. Aircraft have been chartered to bring distributors and dealers from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

"WALK OR STAY AT HOME" "

IF people do not want to walk a few hundred yards to pick up a coach, then they must stay at home. It is an insult to country people to say they cannot walk half a mile," stated the Western Licensing Authority last week. Messrs. J. Chivers and Sons, Welton, Midsomer Norton, applied to run 88 tours. It was submitted that the area had no local tours operators, although its population was 11,000.

Objectors included the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., Mendip Queen Coaches, Ltd., -Associated Motorways, Ltd., British Railways and four other operators. The application was refused.
