Work on one of the' finest roads in Scotland has just .been completed in Dumbartonshire, and now connects Carelochhead and Arrochar along the shores of Loch Long. It is q miles in length, and traverses some of the most heauti'fill country in the valley of the Clyde. The road has been over two years under reconstruction, and during that period it has been closed to all kinds of Motor traffic. Its width has been increased to 16 ft. and 18 ft. at certain points, and for the widened portion a
strong foundation has been laid to a great depth. The whole foundation of the road has been strengthened, the old bridges have been widened and rebuilt, and 300 new culverts have been made in reinforced concrete. Seawalls on the one side and retaining walls on the other have been erected. for a distance of three miles, some of them being 18 ft. high and 7 ft. thick at the bottom. Blind corners and awkward twists have been straightened, and all the bad humps have been either &intim ated or regraded.. Seven or eight Cuttings had to be made,-' one of them being 19 ft. deep.
The cost of this section of the Dumbartonshire road improvements scheme amounts to £44,500, or a little over £10,000 per mile. What a change from the days of General Wade, when a mile of new road through Scottish..moors and hills could be constructed for 911!
