Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

8y Patric Cunnane THE EUROPEAN Parliament's environment committee has voted to introduce tougher emission controls for trucks and buses from 2014.

The Euro-6 regulations require lower caps on emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulates from HGVs, and the committee's Euro-6 proposal more than halves the Euro-5 NOx limit of 180mg,/km which conies into force in September.

However, German MEP Matthias Groote, the rapporteur (sponsor) of the regulations. wants the Euro-5 NOx limit to he reduced by 10%.

"There is general agreement that the limit values for nitrogen oxides laid down in the Commission proposal are not sufficiently ambitious," says Groote, who sits with the Socialist Group in the European Parliament. Groote also wants Euro-6 NOx limits to be set at 70mg/krn for diesel engines.

The decision on Euro-6 will now face scrutiny from the European Parliament, which has begun its summer recess.

It returns to Strasbourg on 1 September.
