A British firm thinking of setting up an operation in Switzerland would have to reckon on paying a sales manager a salary of £24,000 a year. But a sales manager in Portugal would expect a salary of less than £8,000 according to the survey.

Differences in real income may be less dramatic when prices, the cost of living and taxes abroad are taken into consideration.

In comparison, a sales manager working in Britain would be on £12,000 a year; in Ireland and Greece roughly the same; and in Spain and Denmark £10,000. All other countries in the survey paid more than Britain.

A three-course business dinner for four could cost as little as £62 in Lisbon, and as much as £132 in Stockholm. A similar night out in London would be around £95, the report states.

The guide considers such business overheads as office accommodation and services, gas and electricity.
