Fodens' band must keep up steam

THE NEWS that Fodens' American owner, Sandbach Engineering, was to withdraw financial support from that great British institution, Foden Motor Works Band, was irresistible to punning newspaper sub-editors, all of whose headlines played upon a lack of brass. It was enough to make the late Edwin Foden, who formed the band to take part in the celebration of the Relief of Mafeking, put his foot through his celestial harp. There are, however, hopes that a new sponsor will be found. If Wingates Temperani Band could be taken over by Bass, there is no reason why brewer should not support Fodens' band, whose 27 lusty musicians must generate a monumental thirst.
In the last resort, if all the trophies that the band has wo in the past 80 years where melted down and sold, the revenue should keep it going under its own steam for quite while. And it was steam powe that gave birth to what was originally known as the Foden Steam Wagon Works Brass Band. The name was shortene I am sure, to conserve the players' wind for their instruments.
