Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Aluminium tipper bodies for the carriage of materials in bulk were featured on many stands at the three-day East of England Show at Peterborough, which closed yesterday.

A sophisticated bulk fertilizer system was claimed to simplify application in the field.

Picture 1: This 28ft Aluauisse-designed aluminium six-sided body was shown by Seadyke Freight Systems Ltd, March, Cambridge, mounted on a Seadyke standard semi-trailer with York tri-axle running gear, the gvw of the outfit being 32 tons. The semi-trailer has an unladen weight of 5 tons 17cwt.

Picture 2: Highway Trailers produced a special semi-trailer chassis for this bulk tipper that was displayed by E. M. Wilcox Ltd, of Peterborough. The Wilcox 27ft all-welded light-alloy monocoque body has a capacity of 33 cu yd and the semi-trailer weighs a little over 4 ton; the payload in the typical application being more than 20 tons. It is one of four similar vehicles supplied to the operator.

Picture 3: In the big bulk tipper category, a Pengco 25 cu yd six-sided aluminium monocoque body was exhibited by Peterborough Engineering Co Ltd, Peterborough, based on a Scammell Routeman III eight-wheeled chassis, the payload of the vehicle being 16 tons. The body is tipped by an Edbro 5LNC single-ram gear.

Picture 4: Notable examples of smaller lightweight tippers included this Telehoist Tel-lite 9 cu yd aluminium monocoque body that was shown by B. and W. Motors Ltd, Wolverhampton, on a Scania-Vabis LB8OH 16-ton chassis, the unladen weight of the vehicle being 5 tons 16cwt. The chassis is equipped with power steering and a differential lock.

Picture 5: Originally employed to carry gasoline, this 4000gal articulated bulk fertilizer tanker was displayed in the demonstration area by Bettinson's Fertilizer Ltd, Peterborough. The tank was converted by Bettinson, the only special features that were incorporated being a Lister diesel engine power pack mounted at the rear to drive an Alcon discharge pump. It is based on a Soden semi-trailer chassis hauled by an AEC Mandator tractive unit, the gvvv of the outfit being 32 tons. The payload is about 20 tons.

Picture 6: Displayed in the demonstration area of the Agricultural Contractors' Association by the agricultural division of the Calor Gas Co Ltd, Rushden, Northants, was this bulk fertilizer tanker. Liquid ammonia is pumped from the Albion Super Reiver 16-ton-gross bulk tanker to a 2-ton nurse tank (centre) which is used to fill 71cwt application units of the type shown.

Picture 7: A special folding-side aluminium tipper body with extruded lip seals was displayed by the Seadyke Co mounted on a Ford D1000 16-ton-gross chassis. Built of Alusuisse sections, the 17ft 6in. body has a payload of 10 tons and is designed to carry grain in bulk, sacked materials and palleted loads. Details include an Edbro 4LNS tipping gear and Hi-Pope tailboard lift. The lip seal prevents the ingress of water as well as the egress of grain.

Picture 8: Built by the operator, J. W. Richards, of Haddenham, and based on a Seadyke 36ft semi-trailer, this 34ft potato carrying bulk body is mainly of timber construction and can carry a payload of 21 tons. It is equipped with a moving-belt conveyor that may be operated electrically or by a petrol engine, the latter being employed when a rejected load is returned to the farm.
