• On July 17 at Northfleet, Kent, Sir Henry Johnson, chairman of British Railways, and Sir John Reiss, chairman of The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd—parent company of the Blue Circle Group—inaugurated the rail services provided by BR Southern Region into Blue Circle's Northfleet cement works which, when complete in 1971, will be the largest in the world. The Group's primary distribution pattern of the future will consist of depots supplied by trains carrying cement in bulk from large works such as those at Northfleet.
