AN interesting method of repairing cracks in cylinder blocks, other than by welding, is the process known as cold stitching, as carried out by Metalock (Britain), Ltd., Grand Buildings, Trafalgar Square, London, W.C.2. This method of repair is based on the wiggle-nail system, as used to secure stress points in wood.
the crack or break is first clamped in precise alignment, after which a line of blind 'holes is Jig-drilled transversely to the line of the break. These pilot holes are next opened out to size, the bridging metal between the holes being removed by a gun tool.
Into these apertures Metalock keys are driven and peened into the parent metal by pneumatic hammers. Finish is given by means of a grinder.
