Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

C. A Vandervell and Co., Ltd., Warple Way, Acton Vale, London, W.

114] LIGHTING OUTFITS FOR MOTORVANS. [114

This company employs the bus body intended for service on a Straker-Squire chassis as a means of demonstrating its C.A. V. lighting outfit. A close examination is sufficient to convince the most sceptical observer that the self-contained electric light plant for trade and passenger motors has now reached a state of high efficiency. As compared with the older .systems, this means of lighting is compact and cleanly made. The large number of sets already installed and giving satisfactory service is sufficient testimony to the reliability and practical value of the C.A.V. outfit. The moderate price of these sets is a great feature in their favour.

Henry Watson and Sons, High Bridge Works, Walker Cate, Newcastle-on.

Tyne.

136] CYLINDER-CASTING SPECIALISTS. [136 It is natural that this maker should give the greatest prominence to castings of pistons and cylinders of internal-combustion engines. A few moments

can profitably be spent in examining the cleanness and tile design of these parts. It will be seen that surplus metal has been eliminated in all places where it, can be safely dispensed with. The fineness of the metal will impress visitors favourably.

E. G. Wrigley and Co., Ltd., Foundry Lane Works, Soho, Birmingham.

145] A WRIGLEY-DESIGNED REAR AXLE. [145

A rear-axle for a two-ton van, shown in section, will demonstrate the excellent Wrigley idea of a wormdriven bevel differential. The gear and countershaft for a chain-driven vehicle suitable for a 30-cwt. van are worthy of note, and a light transmission, set, comprising a three-speed reverse gearbox, with patent gate-change, and worm-drive rear-axle, with propeller shaft, and torque mechanism suitable for a one-ton van, serves to illustrate the Wrigley transmission. The Wrigley company has also evolved a springdriven self-starter, which is on view, together with first-class examples of gears of many types.

White and Poppe, Ltd., Coventry.

150] FAMOUS MAKERS OF COMMERCIAL ENGINES. [150

White and Poppe, Ltd., holds a premier position in the industry for the construction of engines and carburetters. Any form of product manufactured by this Coventry concern is not standardized until exhaustive experiments have been carried out by the company to insure a high efficiency. Six different types of White and Poppe engines are staged, together with the company's latest form of 30-type carburetter. The detail improvements of this latter accessory were fully des.erilred in our " Purchase Department" recently. The bearings of the engine are fed by means of a pressure pump and external oil leads to the crankcase. The small models are provided with therrno-syphon system of cooling, those of the larger types having a centrifugal pump feed. A feature on this stand is the White and Poppe paraffin carburetter, which has been standardized after exhaustive tests. Carburetters of this type have been supplied to Dennis Bros., Ltd., and other wellknown manufacturers.

S. Wolf and Co., Ltd., 115, Southwark Street, London, S.E.

113] SPECIALITIES WHICH ALWAYS " CATCH Ox." [113 The Solex radiators shown on this stand first arrest the attention of visitors, and, after examination of these parts, some little time should be spent in examining the demonstration magneto, by means of which the strength of the spark can readily be seen. One of these magnetos is fitted with a trip action by means of which a fat spark is obtained no matter how slowly the armature is revolved, Other accessories on the stand which call for a certain amount of consideration are the electrically-driven hand drills, while, of course, a good selection of sparking plugs, tire levers, pumps, horns and so forth is to be noticed. Also, of course, the carburetters.
