Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Walker Bros., Ltd., of Wigan, has sent four examples of its Pagefield machines from the Wigan works. One of these is a two-ton 28 h.p. chain-driven chassis ; the second is a lorry built on similar lines for Mr. John Eccles of Blackburn ; the third is a three-ton hoard-sided wagon for the Doncaster Mutual Cooperative and Industrial Society ; whilst. the " star " exhibit is the new Pagefield chassis which has been built to meet the specification of the War Department for vehicles carrying a gross load of +.1 tons. A full description of the last-named modA will be found in another part of this issue.

An examination of the two-ton chassis vill show that its designers are fully alive to modern requirements. and the whole of the parts are characterized by that sturdiness of design which one would expect from a= company with such a sound El8 reputation for thoroughness of workmanship and excellence of materials. All the three chain-driven models have the .same size and type of engine, which is a four-cylinder 28 h.p. type, with the cylinders else in pairs, and valves arranged on both SilICS Or the engine, whereas the subvention model has all its valves arranged on one side. In both types the valve stems are enclosed, and, so far as possible, external piping has been eliminat!d. Cone type of clutches are fitted, and it should be noted that instead of employing a single central pressure spring for the clutch there are three separate helical springs, any one of which may be removed if necessitated through breakage or other cause, and replaced with perfect ease. Three speeds and a reverse are provided On the chain-driven models, and four speeds and a reverse on the live-axle type. The two-ton chassis shown has been sold to the Wigan Corporation, and the hoard-sided lorry to the Doncaster Mutual Co-operative Society as a third repeat order. The last-named machine is fitted with hoisting tackle, which is driven by bevel gear and chain from the gearbox.
