For the first time in the South of England, the Belsize Co. is showing its twe largest chassis, one of these being a three.-tonner with 28 h.p. engine, and worm drive, the other being a 28 h.p. chain-driven model for four-ton loads. On the opening day of the Show, unfortunately, the worm-driven model was not on the stand, but was just outside the hall waiting to be brought in at the first permissible opportunity. In general construction, these two chaseis have notch in common, the chief differences being the gearbox and hack axle. The chain-driven chassis which was staged at the time of our visit is a very workmanlike machine, and shows evidence of having been produced with considerable care. The four-cylinder engines have their eylinders cast in mare, and in both these eases HeleShew clutches are employed, whilst

in all other Belsize models leatherfaced cone clutches are fitted, The gearbox on the chain-driven fourtonner is of quite interesting design. It is arranged for four speeds and a reverse, the Iaysbaft being in constant gear with the countershaft drive, and this construction has enabled the designers to mount the footbrake drum at the tail end of the layshaft. This makes a most compact and simple arrangement, and provides a powerful means of arresting the motion of the vehicle. The substantial side radius rods anchor the dead axle, and the final drive is transmitted through a pair of roller chains.

In the worm-driven model, however, the gearbox is not required to

contain edifferential gear, and consequently it is only one-half the size of that shown on the four

tonner, and the final drive is transmitted through a card= shaft to the worm-driven live back axle, the torque being resisted by central torque members, whilst side members are provided to take count of the tractive effort. The other exhibits of the Belsize Co. comprise 10-12 h.p. canvas-covered delivery van, a 5 cwt. 14-16 h.p. taxicab, and a 14-16 h.p. box van. Another 5 cwt. machine was also waiting to be brought to the stand as soon as the formalities attending the opening ceremony were completed.

Those of our readers who are familiar with London traffic conditions cannot fail to have observed the Belsize cabs with the distinctive bonnets, which always attract favourable attention in the course of their daily work. 'Many of the leading newspapers, the existence of which depends on. reliable delivery, have selected Belsize machines for the carrying-out of their town and local deliveries.. A corresponding class of expore sales has been made, too, through Mr. A. W. Roslington, of London. At the railway stations, many motorvans made by this Manchester manufacturer can be seen heavily loaded with the latest edi, tions of the London papers, and busily engaged in transferring their loads to the mail trains. The several lighter and high-speed models for these duties combine to a nicety the best points of lightduty vehicles and the necessary strengthening of parts for business uses. This achievement is one of which the company is proud.
