• Another rail disaster was narrowly averted last week when an articulated lorry plunged onto railway lines in South Wales.

The incident was triggered when an Army Land Rover broke down and was forced to park up on the A40 at Great Hardwick, near Abergavenny, although there is no hard shoulder an that stretch of dual carriageway.

On Friday at about 13:30hrs an artic collided with the Land Rover and left the road.

The truck ploughed through a fence and careered six feet down an embankment and onto the southbound

track of the Newport rails line. A train passed the ac dent site on the northbot track just six feet away fr the wreckage only 10 mins after the crash.

The driver of the lorry, y worked for a Cambridge-bat firm, was slightly injured t. was taken to hospital.

British Transport Police Gwent Police are now invm gating the incident.

The accident comes mill week after Gary Hart was si tenced to five years in pro after his Land Rover and trai left the road and was hit b' train in Selby, North Yorks.
