Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Temperature-controlled trailers and bodywork manufacturers are we] known for being innovative; for busy hauliers the problem is keepinl up with developments. Sharon Clancy looks at some state-of-the-art kit.

Refrigerated trailer sales are in the doldrums—the consensus is that last year they were at their lowest for several years. "I would be surprised if the market in 2001 exceeded 1,500 units," says Daniel Laffly, managing director of Lambert Isotherms. Importers such as Chereau, Lamberet, Mirofret and SOR are benefiting from the strength of sterling— the price of ready-for-the road single-temperature 13.6m trailers is said to have dipped below i4o,o0o. With refrigeration units costing between LI3,5 o o and ii5,000, profits are slim.

Predictions

Predictions for 2002 are optimistic, however. Ron Car/afield of Ai-Schmitz-Cargobull reports an upward sales trend in the past six months.

"There is higher demand for the bespoke multi-temperature trailers favoured by the supermarkets and keen interest in the insulated non-refrigerated S P2,5 trailer we launched at last year's CV Show," he says.

Schmitz originally targeted sectors such as pharmaceuticals and confectionery, where products need to be protected from fluctuations in ambient temperature but do not need full temperature control. But now it is targeting van trailer operators.

Because the trailer is insulated, it can be 2.6 metres wide, and the standard recessed load traint track creates a 2.48m ernal load width. The trailer ; a dry freight floor, either alunium or Wisa-Trans.

Jrban artics are also popular. A ical io.4m steer-axle multinpartment urban artic trailer ers more capacity than a corncable rigid with the same inoeuvrability. Klege-Europ has ;t sold four tom trailers to uthern Co-operative Society: 1,y feature Tridec steering axles d pneumatically operated rear utters to speed loading and

loading.

Pizza specialist Papa Johns is operating a Ray Smith-equipped demountable drawbar rig with two 25ft dual-temperature Solomon bodies.

Gray and Adams pioneered twin-deck lifting-floor reefers. A 13.6m chassisless trailer can carry 40 pallets rather than 26. The independently-powered hydraulically lifting deck eliminates the need for an internal or external double-deck tail-lift for loading. Typical interior heights are 1.74m on the upper deck and 1.87m down below.
