Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Distribution industry troubleshooter David Wilcock has been appointed managing director of Toleman Automotive, the car delivery subsidiary of Toleman Holdings, one of the UK's largest car transporter operators.

The appointment comes at a time when Toleman is under acute financial pressure, with its 960-strong workforce accepting a 25% wage cut and changes in working practices (CM 25-31 October 1990).

Wilcock has a reputation for turning around companies in trouble, and has extensive European experience.

Before the move he was managing director of the UK international division of the US courier and express carrier giant Federal Express. In just under three years he took the division from a .22m loss to a 10% profit of 27.5m.

Wilcock has worked for two other 'big four' express distribution carriers — DHL and TNT. During the five years he was in charge of European operations at UHL he opened up lucrative markets in Spain, Portugal and France. He spent 21/2 years heading up the TNT Skypak European Division, turning it around from a lossmaking to a break-even position. He has also worked as a consultant for a variety of com panies including Securicor and Scandinavian Airlines.

"This is a big challenge," says Wilcock. "I will be bringing my logistics and distribution experience to what can be described as a new industry to me. I'll be looking at a number of things in the company including the fleet disposition and better utilisation of labour."
