Battery Water on Tap AN ion-exchange process for purifying ordinary tap water for battery topping up is used in the Elgastat Top-It.-Up unit which is now being marketed generally by Elga Products Ltd. Water produced by the Elgastat is said to be purer than distilled water and the unit is about the size of a small water heater and designed for wall mounting.

Most of the cabinet is taken up by a cartridge containing ion exchange resins and when this is used up—the time wilt depend on the quality of the tap water in the particular district—it can be exchanged for a fresh one through Elga's national cartridge exchange service, An inlet pipe is connected to. a water . tap and purified water is •, drawn off by . operating a switch on the 'cabinet. The supply is automatically cut off when a quantity . of water sufficient to exhaust the cartridge has passed through it.

Operators of battery electric vehicles, including United Dairies, have used Elgastat for a number of years and the unit is similar in operation to one introduced by the Permutit Co. Ltd. about years ago. The cost of producing the purified water is about 12S. 6d. for 12 gal., this being based on the cost of a fresh cartridge. Makers: Elga Products Ltd., Lane End, Bucks.
