Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CONSTITUTING a useful contribution to the economy campaign, a booklet entitled " The Redex Plan for the Transport Operator" is, at the time of writing, just about to be published by the Wayne V. Myers Co., Ltd., 57-58 and 1, Dolben Street, London, S.E.I. We have received an advance copy.

..It is claimed that accurate tests have shown that the Redex plan, properly applied, results in a saving of 25 per cent. ji oil fuel or petrol. This, to quote from the booklet, repays the cost of the Redex about 14 times over. The scheme is based on the release of extra power by reduction of internal friction and by maintaining the good condition of the power unit. Redex achieves this end by increasing the oil-film ,sireng:th and by repelling restrictive gums and carbon, whilst the engine can be kept in good tune with the aid of the Redex tester.

The claims are not made without evidence to substantiate them, and we understand that during the past 11 years 50,900 tests have supplied corroborative data.

Redex is used by adding it to engine oil, fuel and gearbox and back-axle lubricants, also by introducing it into the cylinders via the air intake. It can be fed into the appropriate components of the vehicle, or the lubricant, petrol or oil fuel can be treated in the storage tank, Full instructions on the use of the Redex engine tester are given in the booklet. It is stated that over 4,000 of 'these instruments are in use. To effect the maximum fuel economies, smaller jets should be fitted after starting to use Redex, whilst, in the case of oil engines, the maximumspeed adjustment should be reset to give a similar result. Producer-gas engines are particularly susceptible to the beneficial effects of Redex. Another valuable feature of the preparation is that it makes starting in very cold weather much easier.

Figures are quoted in the booklet to show actual improvements that have been obtained. One set relates to compression pressures, another concerns, oil temperatures, and, thirdly, a performance graph is reproduced showing improvements recorded by a British engine maker in b.h.p., torque and consumption per b.h.p.-hr. In evbry case the gains are substantial. ,
