Q0.11E 18 months ago a new design of half-drop window produced by Rawlings Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Larch Road, London, S.W.12. Since that time further improvements have been incorporated, and the latest type—known as the P.Y.P.—isnow available. The operating shaft and winding mechanism are contained within a casing mounted on the top edge of the lower window, the operation being by means of a worm gear, which rotates a shaft having on each end a pinion that engages with racks formed on the vertical frames of the upper window.

On the earlier model the standard position for the worm

gear mechanism and the operating handle was the centre of the frame. This has, however, been offset to the righthand side on the latest design, although the central position may still be used, if desired.

No alteration has been found necessary to the overwinding safety device, which comprises a spring-loaded

dog clutch, contained within the hZedle. Should the winding of the handle be continued after reaching the limit of the window's travel, in either direction, the clutch slips and no strain is put upon the mechanism.

The window is now held tightly in the runners by means of steel springs, so that it is rattle-proof, and the design is such that the springs can be quickly withdrawn and replaced without removing the drop light from its runners. An accompanying illustration shows one spring partly withdrawn from the run channel.

To replace or reset the spring is the work of but a few moments, and, at the same time, access is gained to the runner, so that it may easily be cleaned.

Due to the geared drive, and the lightness of operation, it is possible to provide a heavy weathering rubber, on the bottom channel of the drop light, which presses tightly egainst the fixed light. This feature makes the window proof against vibration of the lower channel, which has often been the cause of rattle on earlier designs.

Weight reduction has been carefully studied, and the channels can be. made of polished aluminium alloy, if desired; either a standard or anodized finish is available.

We found the window to be remarkably easy to operate and this, together with the safety device, light weight, antirattle, and practical maintenance features, should make a wide appeal to both Operators and passengers.
