Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A South Wales 'User Obtains 100,000 Miles from a Set of Pirelli Air-core Tyres on. a Leyland Bus.

AMONGST favourable reports from satisfied users of its tyres, Pirelli, Ltd., 144, Queen Victoria Street, London, E.C.4, has received a number which pays tribute to the exceptionally high mileages obtained under service conditions from sets of its air-core, cushion-type tyres. A case of this nature, which is particularly worthy of mention, is that concerning a pair of twin tyres of this type, which is fitted on the rear wheels of a 26-seater Leyland bus owned by the I3ishopston and Aiirton Motor Services, Ltd.' Heathdene, Norway, Bishopston, Swansea. It is stated that those tyres have covered 100,000 miles on regular service work and are still in a sufficiently roadworthy condition to warrant the belief

that they are good for many moi.e miles ' .running. This achievement is specially remarkable when one considers the district in which the tyres have been used. The roads in South Wales aboundin steep gradients and in certain eases their surfaces are noted for their unsatisfactory condition. Daily duties in all weathers and under such road conditions must form a most stringent test for any tyre.

An interesting point is that the company 115'r—equipped the front wheals of the Leyland in question with pneumatic tyres of 36-in. by 6-in. dimensions. In a letter we have received from the Bishopston and Morton Motor Services, Ltd., it is stated that the combination of cushion and pneumatic tyres has given most satisfactory results. Previous to equipping the vehicle in this manner, the concern ran it with solid tyres on the rear wheels and with pneumatics on those at the front, and it was then found that the average of broken rear spring-leaves was approximately one per week, whereat with Pirelli air-core tyres in place of the solids we learn that only one spring-leaf broke during 85,000 miles' running.

The company speaks well of the riding comfort given by the present tyre equipment and • mentions that general running conditions have been noticeably improved and ebassis-maintenance costs reduced since fitting Pirelli cushion tyres. Incidentally, the kirge-size pneumatics used on this vehicle cover an average of 23,000 to 30,000 miles in ordinary service.
