After preliminary enquiry on the part of its Engineer and Surveyor, the Surbiton Urban District Council, at its meeting last week, gave instructions that a further report should be presented in regard to the purchase of a steam rnotorvan, at an estimated cost of L',600.

Apropos the article (pages 463 and 464) about the Simms-Welbeck 1937 models, we are interested to learn that Deny and Toms, Limited, of Kensington, and Hampton and Sons, Limited, of Pali Mall, are, respectively, the latest buyers of the company's I-ton and 2ton models.

Of the 41 entrants for the A.C. Sideslip and Skid Prevention Competition, 27 have been ruled out at the first meetings of the Drawings Sub-Committee and the Expert and Technical Committee. Two had, previously, withdrawn, and 12 devices are left in the running, for trial on the 51h proximo.

The proposals of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, in regard LI the alteration of its constitution, as outlined in our issue of the loth instant (page 411), were approved, at an extraordinary general meeting of members, last week. The new class of " associate members " is to have one quarter representation on the Council, and each trade section will also be represented.

At the meeting of the Metropolitan Asylums Board on Saturday, the Ambulance Committee reported that the two petrol motor omnibuses were running satisfactorily. Both were, chiefly, employed in conveying recovered patients from the convalescent hospitals to the ambulance stations for discharge to their friends. The committee recommended that it be :luthorised to obtain tenders (upon specifications) for the supply of two more motor omnibuses, one to carry 16 and the other to adult passengers inside, and to employ an expert adviser, if necessary. The recommendation was adopted. A total of le vehicles started, on ieth November, for the t,000-mile trial run in the French Military Trials, and only nine of these completed the course Paris-Marseilles-Paris. Fuel consumption was tested over two of the 16 stages, for an aggregate distance of 126 miles, and the competitors were given no warning on these occasions. Any vehicle which maintained an average speed of five miles per hour was allowed to continue in the tests, which were successfully completed by the following machines : -In the goods class : Darracq-Serpollet (Nos. 2 and 3); Peugeot ;

Mors ; Dion-Bouton ; Orion ; Berliet. Also, in the omnibus class : DarracqSerpollet (No. I); and Orion. The Dar

spirit added, whilst all the other machines were operated on " Stelline " spirit. The two Orion machines were the most economical in spirit consumption per ton of gross weight, whilst a Darracq-Serpollet vehicle maintained the highest average speed in each of the two classes. The analysed results will be published in tabular form in our next issue.

The Hoffmann Manufacturing Company, Limited, whose steel balls and standard ball bearings are known the world over, has made a special donation of ten guineas to the Foundation Fund of the British Empire Motor Trades Alliance. Its managing director, Mr. Paul C. Low, is a member of the committee of this society.

Notwithstanding the phenomenal support that has been secured by the first commercial-motor show of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and which is to be opened, at Olympia, on the 7th of March next, Messrs. Cordingley and Company report that they are well satisfied with the bookings for their twelfth annual exhibition at the Agricultural Hall, which is to be held early in April. We regret to learn of the death of Mr. S. J. L. Afichin, one of the directors of William Allchin, Limited, of Globe Works, Northampton, which occurred, on the loth instant, followingan attack of acute pneumonia.

Amongst. the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Company's recent Orik-rs for 5-ton wagons are the following For a fourth vehicle, from Messrs Mutter Howey and Company, of New castle-on-Tyne ; for a fifth vehicle, from Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Limited, of Manchester ; and, for a sixth vehicle, from C. T. Faulkner and Co., Ltd., of Manchester.

Chelsea I3orough Council has ac. cepted an offer by Messrs_ Briggs, of Bradford, to lend, free of charge for two months, one of the firm's patent machines for sweeping and collecting mud and refuse from roadways. The machine has been specially built, for haulage behind an ordinary Leyland steam motor, of which the Chelsea Council owns tz7„ and one Thornycroft.

The usual monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Motor Van, Wagon and Omnibus Users' Association was held, last week, at t, Albemarle Street, W., when the Chairman, Colonel R. E. B. Crompton, C.B., M.Inst.C.E., presided. There were also present : Mr. S. D. Gilbert (London Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.); Dr. H. S. Hele-Shaw, F.R.S., M.Inst.C.E. ; Mr_ W. G. Lobjoit ; Mr_ Douglas Mackenzie ; Mr. J. C. Mitchell (London Road Car Co., Ltd.); Mr. E. Shrapnel! Smith (Hon. Treasurer); and Mr. W. Rees Jeffreys (Secretary).

Commercial Motor Trials.—, subcommittee reported as to a conference with sub-committees of the Automobile Club and of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. It was resolved that 'Messrs. Baxendale, Lobjoit and Dr. Hele-Shaw be appointed to represent the Association on the Joint Commercial Vehicle Trials Committee; failing Mr. Baxendrde, Mr. Douglas Mackenzie undertook to act as his deputy on any occasion.

Side-slip and Skid Prevention.—It was reported than Messrs. Coventry, Mackenzie, and Thompson Lyon had been appointed judges, as representatives of the ssociation. In addition, in response to a request from the :1utomo

bile Club, Mr. Daniel Duff (London Road Car Co., Ltd.), and Mr. R. Bell (London Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd.). were nominated to represeht the Association at the drawings sub-committee.

Exhibitions.—A letter was read from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on this subject. The principal matter of interest was the decision of the Society to admit members of the Association, free of charge. to the forthcoming Commercial Motor Exhibition at Olympia.

Motorbus Licenses.—A list of the. local authorities which have refused to. license motorbuses was submitted. The report of the decision in the case of theaction of the Glasgow and SouthWestern Railway Company against the Burgh of Saltcoats was, also, noted. Periodical Inspection. -Messrs. Wordie and Company, of Glasgow, raised the question of the Association's. arrangements for the periodical inspection of mechanical vehicles. It was resolved to consider the early despatch of one of the Association's authorised engineers to the Glasgow district, and instructions were given in regard to this matter.

Roadside Water Supply.--It was reported that the chief engineer to the Metropolitan Water Board was proceeding with the construction of a specimen water-post, for the supply of water on the " penny-in-the-slot " system. A letter from the engineer intimated that he would arrange for its inspection by the Association at an early date.
