Another practical reason is the failure of the automotive industry to agree on a common standard for automotive electrical power. Five years ago, it was widely agreed that the industry would move to 42V electrical systems as the predominant 12V systems would not be suitable for the emerging data networks. This would have given trucks and cars the same 36V batteries.

Its a measure of how rapidly developments are taking place that the 42V architecture has already been abandoned because the cost of adopting it would be prohibitive. It is also clear that the new networks will be able to function satisfactorily using 12V systems. As a result many of the developments are centred on 12V systems and are then adapted for 24V in CVs.
