DRIVERS AT Rugby Cement are threatening to strike after rejecting the firm's latest pay offer by 255 votes to three.
Drivers are angry that despite taking its logistics in-house the firm has continued to apply regional bonus payments.
These were implemented by TNT Logistics when it ran the con tract two years ago to stop drivers quitting for better-paid jobs (CM 9 October 2003).
One driver says: "Everyone should be on the same wage with the exception of London where there has always been a London weighting. But for drivers working out of Rugby and Scunthorpe there should be no difference as fuel, gas and council tax are around the same. Everyone else working for Rugby Cement earns the same wherever they work; it is only drivers who are discriminated against."
The Transport and General Workers Union says that the onus is now on the company to continue negotiations or it will proceed with a ballot for industrial action.
