Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHY 50MPH? Forget the rhetoric, look at these facts: • HGV motorway limit:60mph. Actual limited speed; 56mph.

• Most fuel economic travelling speed quoted in every new car handbook:56mph.

• The EC originally called for limiters to be set at 53mph, • Many supermarket trunkers are encouraged or limited to 50mph for fuel economy.

• Dual carriageway limit:56mph.

• A-class road:40mph.

• 7.5-tonners will soon be fitted with limiters and white van man won't be far behind. • Gatso cameras are set to catch vehicles exceeding car speed limits on A-roads and dual carriageways.

• Nobody can drive faster than the queue of traffic in front.

So, a little commonsense here please. Set all limiters to 55mpli and remove national HGV limits on A-roads and dual carriageways. All roads that deserve it can still have specific speed limits; otherwise we all do 55mph. Remember the failsafe position, going too fast for prevailing road conditions, is seldom dealt with as a speeding offence—it is usually classed as reckless or dangerous driving, and those charges will always be used for the idiots.

Anyway, we have no idea how we are going to survive the WTI); perhaps this suggestion will impact on that discussion.

One thing is for sure: that Fiat Panda sandwiched between 88 tonnes of rolling metal on the Win a downpour, saving pennies, will not have an MP in it, not in your wildest dreams. Dave Andrews Mark Andrews Transport Plymouth
