Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The reasons which influenced the Sunderland District Tramways Co. to discard tramcars in favour of motorbuses over their entire system were concisely given at the 20th annual general meeting of the company by Mr. Reg. Taylor,' who presided. Substitution, the chairman pointed out, had been forced upon them by the suecess of the internal-combustion engine.

Continuing, he said the company's

initial experiment with buses was made over the Penshaw section of route, and • as a direct result of the operation of four buses the regular tramway deficit had been quickly overtaken. That route, with its recent extension to Washington, had become a successful one for the first time for a very long while. Similar results, said Mr. Taylor, had been achieved on other sections, and during the year 126,887 had been

expended, entirely out of revenue, upon the purchase of 24 buses, the eld tramway stock and equipment having been sold. To date £19,247 had been realized by that means. At present another 24 buses are on order, and in all probability an -additional 15 vehicles would be purchased shortly.

The title of the company was changed to the more appropriate one : the Sunderland District Transport Co.
