Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SHOULD the manufacturers of cleansing vehicles sit down together around a table and evolve a series of standardized designs'? Some speakers in a debate on Greater London activities, which took place at the recent conference of the Institute of Works and Highways Superintendents, thought they should.

At first glance, ,the idea appears attractive. However, a wide variety of conditions must be met in that not inconsiderable area covered by the GLC. Thus cleansing officers there, to say nothing of those in other parts of the country, might have very mixed feelings if any drastic reduction took place in the number of designs available.

The great argument in favour of standardization is that it would enable costs to be reduced. Whether this would actually happen in the cleansing field is open to question. From what I know of the matter, the keen competition at present existing brings finely cut prices already. and it seems improbable that figures agreed among a number of manu

facturers for a series of stock designs would represent any saving whatever as compared with present levels.
