The Smethwick,West Midlands)ased firm uncovered the pay liscrepancies following a query by )ne of the drivers' wives over her lusband's wages.

The details were disclosed as Iriver Robert Lawlor claimed !ompensation for unfair dismissal. I le was sacked for gross misconduct alter GeoPost alleged he had claimed pay for time not worked while on a Dublin delivery run.

The Tribunal was told that Lawlor had claimed pay from 2am to 7am while in Dublin, although his tacho showed he did not start work until 7am.

Lawlor said other drivers had claimed "waiting time" pay for the early hours because they were away from home and on duty.

There had been problems recruiting drivers for the Dublin run, but special allowances were paid and drivers on this run were among the highest-paid at the firm.

The Tribunal has vet to make a decision on the case.
