Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

not a matter of trust

1 READ WITH UTTER astonishment the letter (EGR vs SCR: who canyon trust?) in last week's issue (CM 17 August). For those who didn't bother to read the address line, let me point out that it came from the sales manager of a Volvo dealership, not an 'operator' as implied in the text; Volvo is, of course, totally committed to pushing SCR in the UK. So let me be clear, this is not a matter of trust, it is a matter of hard, technical fact.

1 will not bother with the naive EGR car comparisons made, but I will state publicly that genuine, professional truck operators who have had Euro-4 EGR demonstrators from MAN-ERF are impressed by both the fuel and on-road performance of the vehicles. Right now, they are impressed enough to have ordered over 700 such trucks.

As a pioneer of SCR as well as EGR. MAN is naturally offering certain European markets SCR to allow them to benefit from local incentives. However. I stand behind my statement in your 3 August issue that early introduction of Euro-5 in the UK is not in the best interests of the (U K) market or environment".

With SCR freely and fully available to us at MAN-ERE, I hope that even Mr Cogger will now realise our stance is nothing whatsoever to do with, as he puts it,the interests of MAN".

One final point, if I may. If Mr Cogger seeks to justify his pose as an operator because his dealership has rental vehicles on offer, he should know better than anyone the general industry view as to the problems AdBlue management could cause in that sector.

Like him, I urge operators to watch for the results of CM's 1,000-mile test of EGR and SCR vehicles coming shortly. Operators and the industry at large deserve a clear comparison, albeit a one-off, of the respective merits of the two Euro-4 and 5 technologies at work.

Certainly at MAN-ERE we are looking forward to it!

Dave Cussans Sales & marketing director, MAN-ERE UK • CM plans to settle the EGR vs SCR debate next month with a head-to-head Euro-4 arlic lesl; in the meantime we'd welcome your views on our letters page—Ed
