Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TRUCK DRIVERS' PAY rose by just 3% in the past year according to the GMB union. despite a perception in the industry that workforce shortages were helping to boost salaries.

The union has released the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings in 2005 for UK Occupations, which shows LGV drivers on average make £21,869. This compares with £21.075 for 2004. They earn less than laboratory technicians and road construction operatives and slightly more than process operatives, dispensing opticians, floorers, tilers and youth and community workers.

They are ranked a lowly 188th in the pay scale out of 340 occupations. Transport managers' pay rose from £32,853 to £33,597; van drivers' pay rose from £17,014 to £17,813.

Ruth Pott, head of employment at the Road Haulage Association, says that according to RHA pay rates, van drivers' income went up by as much as 6% in a year. which is beyond the cost of living increases. She says one reason for this could be the growing popularity of home shopping.

• The Freight Transport Association's latest Quarterly Transport Activity Survey suggests the industry is experiencing an upturn in fortunes, with businesses more positive about demand for haulage services than they have been for two years.
